Stanford University x Hosted in Africa: AI Security and Discourse in Global Africa

On the 12th of June 2025 Hosted in Africa (HiA) was proud to collaborate with Stanford University graduate students (represented by Karen Hoshino & Fujie Zhang), to host a community-led dialogue on AI security and discourse in Global Africa, with comparative perspectives from around the Globe.
In addition, the dialogue was supported by AI 4 Afrika (AI4A), Tanzania AI Community and Pollicy, with leaders from each organization contributing to the panelist presentations. Our panel was graced by: Rachel Magege (Pollicy), Essa Mohamedali (Tanzania AI Community), Femi Omere & Alexander Otuka (HiA), and Dr. José Cossa (AI4A).
The purpose of the discourse was to create an inclusive and continental space for African and African diaspora communities, friends and allies, to discuss the current conversations, concerns, and initiatives around AI and security. Conducting the session in a dialogical rather than didactic method fosters collective exploration and listening.
The main objectives of the dialogue were to:
- Understand local, regional, and diaspora narratives on AI and security,
- Explore how youth from different regions conceptualize risk, opportunity, and agency,
- Introduce comparative perspectives from outside Africa (USA, Brazil, China),
- Begin surfacing themes for deeper analysis in a follow-up event.
